Saving your Prompts to Copilot Prompt Gallery

Why use prompting techniques?

One of the reasons why Generative Artificial Intelligence became so popular and widely adopted is the ease that comes with communicating with the program in natural language, in other words: the way people talk to each other.

And although every AI company encourages people to “keep it conversational”, users very soon find that a chat with a Generative AI tool does not really feel like a conversation: maybe too long, cognitively demanding and lead to outputs that do not meet our expectations.

A great way of getting better outcomes from AI tools, and have more satisfactory interactions, is to use prompting techniques. Task framing, persona prompts, process techniques… they balance natural language with more specific instructions compatible with computing systems.

A prompt worth saving

Applying prompting techniques does not come naturally and it is not effortless, specially not at the start. Users find themselves digging through their previous chats trying to find that great prompt they once wrote, or copying and pasting their favorite prompts into another application.

I’ve been helping people learn about generative artificial intelligence tools since early 2023, and to the date I have only seen one of the main competitors provide a solution: the Prompt Gallery from Microsoft Copilot. It allows users to save their own prompts and reuse them.

A prompt collection or gallery within easy reach for users, available at the start of a chat as well as in the middle of a chat, is arguably one of the most useful features, that every generative AI application should offer.

Hide and seek

Generative AI is a rapidly evolving and competitive field. Providers often modify the interface, the name of the features, the graphics, the labelling, their location, and availability.

For instance, the Prompt Gallery used to be relatively easy to find at the beginning of a new chat, as well as in the middle of a chat, because there was either a menu or a symbol near the chat box. Unfortunately the interface has changed, and it is now tricky to find this feature when you are in the middle of a chat.

The video below shows how to save and reuse your prompts in Microsoft Copilot, as well as a couple of examples to get started.
